The Love of Reading

Jacqueline Kennedy said, “There are many little ways to enlarge your child’s world.  Love of books is the best of all."

It seems like these days many kids are glued to playing video games or watching TV or constantly texting friends.  Nothing objectionable with any of these activities.  It seems like of one of things that may get lost in a child’s life is reading books.

Reading is one of my favorite things to do.  I enjoy learning about life through the eyes of another person/character or simply picking up knowledge about what’s in the world and how something works (or doesn't work).  My two year old son appears to have acquired this interest. Right from the beginning he has enjoyed reading books and having me and his daddy read to him.  I want him to learn, explore, and be curious about his world.  It’s so exciting to see him increase his vocabulary and string words together about what he has read.

Some of my son’s favorite books

*Dr. Seuss’s ABCs and Hop on Pop

*The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? – Eric Carle

*Yum Yum Dim Sum – Amy Wilson Sanger

*Eating the Alphabet A to Z– Lois Ehlert

*I Love Trains – Philemon Sturges

*The Pigeon Finds a Hot Dog – Philemon Sturges

I encourage parents to start (if you haven't already) encouraging your children to read more, especially about things that interest them.  Take a trip to the library or bookstore and browse around.  They also have reading times for children.  I believe kids can feel good about themselves when they can read and apply what they have learned to their lives.
